Legendary Australian rock band INXS has been named the recipient of the prestigious Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Services to Australian Music, one of the highest honors in the country’s music industry. The award will be presented at the APRA Music Awards 2026, scheduled to take place on April 29, 2026, at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion.
With a legacy spanning decades, INXS has sold over 75 million albums worldwide and earned global recognition from both fans and industry peers. According to APRA AMCOS, the band’s influence extends far beyond national borders, with their work helping shape the global blueprint for modern rock music.
Formed in 1977, INXS quickly rose to international prominence, becoming one of the most successful rock acts of their era. The band’s classic lineup featured Andrew, Jon, and Tim Farriss, alongside Garry Beers, Kirk Pengilly, and iconic frontman Michael Hutchence. Together, they delivered a string of chart successes, including five Top 20 albums on the Billboard 200 and a No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Need You Tonight” from their landmark album Kick.
Their success was equally significant in the United Kingdom, where INXS achieved six Top 10 albums, including a chart-topping release with Welcome to Wherever You Are in 1992. The band also received a BRIT Award in 1991 for Best International Group, further cementing their global status.
APRA Chair Jenny Morris praised the band’s enduring impact, describing INXS as “truly one-of-a-kind.” Reflecting on her experience performing with the group during the 1980s, including their appearance at Wembley Stadium alongside Queen, Morris highlighted their electrifying stage presence and timeless songwriting. She emphasized the band’s unique ability to captivate audiences worldwide, leaving a lasting impression through both their recordings and live performances.
The legacy of Michael Hutchence, who passed away in 1997 at the age of 37, remains deeply intertwined with the band’s identity. His influence continues to resonate, with INXS maintaining cultural relevance across generations. Even after officially disbanding in 2012, the group’s music continues to reach new audiences through film, television, and major global events.
Among their many accolades are six APRA Music Awards, six ARIA Awards, and induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2001. Their catalog includes enduring hits such as “Don’t Change,” “Original Sin,” “Mystify,” and “What You Need.” The band’s 1987 classic “Never Tear Us Apart” was also voted the greatest Australian song of all time in a major listener poll conducted by triple j.
The Ted Albert Award is determined by the APRA board and recognizes individuals or groups that have made an outstanding contribution to Australian music. Previous recipients include Paul Kelly, The Seekers, Cold Chisel, Colin Hay, and Kylie Minogue.
This year’s ceremony will also feature special performances and a tribute dedicated to INXS, marking a historic celebration as APRA commemorates its 100th anniversary. Confirmed performers include BARKAA, BOY SODA, Ecca Vandal, Ngulmiya, Playlunch, and Rob Ruha.
The recognition arrives shortly after INXS was nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2026, though they were not selected this year. With the band approaching its 50th anniversary, another opportunity for induction is expected in the near future.
Meanwhile, the APRA Music Awards will also spotlight emerging and established talent competing for Song of the Year, including Amyl and the Sniffers, Kevin Parker, Keli Holiday, Ninajirachi, and Dan Kelly alongside Paul Kelly.
With 52 first-time nominees featured this year, the 2026 APRAs promise to be a landmark event, celebrating both the heritage and future of Australian music.
